This past weekend, Lucky Seven Games hosted its Marvel’s Spider-Man Prerelease event, welcoming Magic: The Gathering players for an action-packed weekend of sealed deckbuilding and heroic showdowns. The excitement was high as players cracked open packs, discovered powerful cards, and tested out the new set’s mechanics straight from the multiverse of Spider-Man.
Prerelease events give players the chance to dive into a brand-new set before it officially hits shelves. A week ahead of the global release, local game stores give each player a prerelease kit packed with boosters, a foil promo, and the essentials to build a deck. Using just those cards (plus basic lands), everyone builds a minimum 40-card deck and jumps straight into matches. It’s Limited format at its finest — creative deckbuilding, surprising pulls, and plenty of room for epic plays.
With an hour to construct their decks before heading into three rounds of matches, players battled it out for packs, earning one pack per win.
What’s Inside a Prerelease Kit:
Each prerelease kit contained:
-
6 Magic: The Gathering Marvel's Spider-Man Play Boosters
-
1 Traditional foil year-stamped rare or mythic rare card
-
1 Deck box
-
1 Spindown die (given randomly from among five total color variations)
Deckbuilding Highlights
Players leaned into a variety of strategies using the new mechanics introduced in the Marvel’s Spider-Man set:

Many players leaned toward red and black, curious to see how the new Mayhem mechanic would play out. Some built around Aunt May, using her to pump up their “Spiders” and swing for bigger damage. Others weren’t afraid to get creative, splashing green into their red/black decks to chase powerful bombs. With Mayhem on their side, these builds often turned small creatures into real threats. The event also had its share of exciting pulls, from borderless art cards to the one everyone had their eye on — The Soul Stone.
Gameplay Moments
With over ten players each night, everyone was paired each round, and the matches did not disappoint. One player pulled off an incredible comeback with Black Cat, Cunning Thief, turning what looked like a loss into a surprise win. Another went undefeated with a sharp red/black build that made full use of the new Mayhem mechanic. And while each round was set for an hour, plenty of time on paper, the Spider-Man decks had such strong synergy that several matches still ended in draws.
Community & Vibe
The store was buzzing with energy. Between rounds, players compared pulls, traded cards, and shared laughs. Although some players were initially nervous as to the playability of the deck they built, they were surprised to see how much they enjoyed dueling with this new set. The event was a mix of veterans and newcomers, making it a welcoming experience for everyone.

Overall, the prerelease event was a huge success at Lucky Seven Games. Between thrilling gameplay, exciting pulls, and a great community turnout, the event was a reminder of why prerelease weekends are such a highlight for Magic fans.Players left excited to refine their decks and prepare for the global release this Friday, September 26th.
